• Reactions that are thermodynamically not favorable

are driven by a favorable reaction e.g. the hydrolysis

of ATP:

ATP + H2O ADP + Pi + H+ (- 7.3 kcal/mol)

ADP + H2O AMP + Pi + H+ (- 7.3 kcal/mol)

• ATP hydrolysis shifts the equlibria of coupled reactions

by a factor of up to 108
