BIOMS - Center for Modelling and Simulation in the Biosciences
The BIOMS Center in Heidelberg has been established to promote the use of of
modelling and simulation in the biosciences. The Center is financed by the
state of Baden-Wrttemberg, the Klaus Tschira Foundation and participating
research institutions which are:
The research of the center focuses on the elucidating how systems behavior arises from the interplay of molecules in the cell. Thus, scale transitions will be explored in detail. Few examples for research problems that could be studied in this context are
How can the process of cell division be understood on the basis of molecules?
How do mechanical forces arise from the interplay of individual myosin and
actin molecules?
How are system dynamical properties like calcium oscillations dependent on the properties
of channels and receptors?
How do biochemical pathways switch dynamically between different functions?
There will be three junior research groups which will initially be hosted by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL),
the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the University of Heidelberg.
The heads of these junior groups have
been selected recently and the groups will start their work in the coming weeks.
These heads are Matthias Weiss (preliminary group page), Ulrich Schwarz (preliminary group page)
and Francois Nedelec (group page)
Additional postdoctoral positions are available at each of these institutions plus EML Research and the
Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research. Please see application procedure for details.
Scientific quality of the center is assured by a scientific committee which
(so far) has the following members:
Peer Bork - EMBL
Wilfried Denk - MPIMF
Roland Eils - DKFZ
Willi Jger - IWR, University of Heidelberg
Eric Karsenti - EMBL
Ursula Kummer - EML Research
Blanche Schwappach - ZMBH, University of Heidelberg
Jeremy Smith - IWR, University of Heidelberg
Otmar Wiestler - DKFZ
